At the end of 2017, as a result of something new we (my students and I) were trying in Physical Education called #EdCampPEClass, the PE Coalition was born. There was a group of individuals from each of my PE classes that were instrumental in making this new model of instruction better. They offered to help with every aspect and proved that we could accomplish more as a team. I asked them if the would be willing to form a PE Coalition and they responded whole heartedly!
Jobs students helped with ranged from creating logos, curating fitness tips, helping design lessons for our #EdCampPEClass, and advocating for health and fitness in our class and the community. We also were fortunate enough to have our very own "Journal Squad," or Super 6 Journalism students from Ms. Pfotzer's class connect with us to do a series of articles about our new type of PE. Once those articles were complete, we asked if they would be willing to join us on special assignment to write blogs about the challenges that teens face in the 21st Century regarding fitness, nutrition, meditation, and sleep. These were the areas that the PE Coalition wanted to address. So, the journalism students agreed to not only create articles to share but also to join the PE Coalition.
I was listening to the EduMatch Voxer group and heard a funny conversation about the Blogger's Café at ISTE. Ran the idea past my students, which they loved, and now we will have our own Blogger's Café that will be open during select advisory days (4 days a month), extra time, and during Saturday school that our high school offers. This Café will be in the gym on lunch tables that we are fortunate enough to have! I hope this turns out to be a fantastic project, and if it leads to just one student deciding to lead a more healthy life than I would say it was worth it!
This page will become a dedicated space for our student bloggers to share their work. From this page, our PE students, and PE Coalition members will create shorter tips and activities to share out as well. I hope that student's helping students will become the norm instead of the exception, and by highlighting their work, it will allow teens to learn and grow together.
