Good afternoon, this is Jeff Menzer, Principal of William Penn High School, please allow me a moment of your time to share important information about your child’s education.
The faculty of William Penn wants you to know that by the time your child graduates from William Penn High School, we want them to have the ability to read, comprehend, and write about complex texts commonly found in college and careers.
In fact, one of the key requirements of the Common Core State Standards for Reading is that all students must be able to comprehend texts of increasing complexity as they progress through high school.
We feel that being able to read complex text, fiction and non-fiction, is essential to a student’s success beyond high school for both college and/or the workplace.
In order support this critical focus on literacy skills, William Penn High School has developed a “Reading for Learning” initiative. We have asked all teachers to increase the amount of non-fiction reading and writing in every course.
On October 30th and 31st, all students will be expected to read an article or short essay, and answer critical questions and show evidence to support their claims for every class.
On November 1st, teachers will analyze student work and determine the path forward to increase the literacy skills of all students.
We ask that all parents encourage their child to read more, both fiction and non-fiction and summarize the reading as much as possible. As you know, college and the workplace put an increased focus on a person’s ability to read, summarize, and solve complex problems.
William Penn High School is dedicated to preparing students to read independently, all while increasing their content knowledge, and responding with their new knowledge in a variety of ways.
Next Wednesday and Thursday, we are asking students to put forth their best effort, in all of their classes, into this initiative. Thank you for your continued support.
