EdCampPEClass - 1st Crossover Event with Carrie Downie Elementary School

On Thursday, January 11, 2018, William Penn hosted its first crossover event allowing the Carrie Downie fifth graders to learn from William Penn PE Coalition students in an EdCampPE format. The goal of the PE Coalition was to hook younger students on physcial activity and sport in hopes that they will begin or continue to live a healthy lifestyle, and it was clear that by the end of our first event, the goal was met for many of the students.
Jaden Reed and Davinson Ariza were fortunate to attend and witness the crossover event. Jaden recalls, “I coached the fifth grader's basketball and I had an amazing time doing so. Just watching the students play against each other as they used the moves that I taught them was great. In no time, I taught them dribbling moves and they are started using these moves already which shows how big of an impacted the camp had on students. In my eyes, I could tell the students had a good time learning and playing. I could tell they were having a good time with the effort and the amount of competitiveness they were playing with. It was fun and exciting to watch.”
Davinson recalls, “I coached the soccer section and personally enjoyed the EdCamp from a volunteer's perspective because I enjoy playing soccer, which is the game I love to play. Being able to play with the younger guys was definitely a great experience. It was great to see the students try to play soccer and learn a new sport but most of all it was fantastic to see the students have fun while being athletic and trying new sports that they never thought they would try. My involvement in the EdCamp program began when I decided to write an article for Ms. Minka's Physical Education class when they did their EdCamp. I found it so interesting and I thought Ms.Minka was doing something amazing for the students and even for the students who came from Carrie Downie Elementary.”
“My thoughts on EdCamp are actually that I've had a little experience with EdCamps. I've known about them for a number of years and I think you guys did a great job here by allowing kids lots of great choices and what I've seen so far for the activities are really thorough and you guys obviously know what you’re talking about,” claims Principal Douglas Timm. “I think this idea is really great for children. I think it's really great for high school students because you get to show your leadership and for the students at Carrie Downie, it gives them exposure to the high school. It also lets them see students who are just like them but just a few years older.” Principal Timm believes that what Ed Camp has to offer is excellent for the students. Peter’s views on EdCamp were also glowing. “Just to see fun it is and be with other people and get to learn new things together, also by having a lot of fun and get to play together as a community at William Penn High School and it’s just a lot of fun and it’s enjoyable, it’s cool and what I love about EdCamp is that I can learn and grow while playing new sports.”
